MIME2120 - Engineering Materials
MIME2120 Engineering Materials 3 Credit Hours
Prerequisites CHEM1101, PHYS1200
Goal To introduce to the students the basics of engineering materials.
ObjectivesOutcomes
This course should enable the student to:

  1. Familiarize with classification of engineering materials
  2. Understand the basic properties of materials and structure of materials.
  3. Study the application of materials
  4. Understand the selection of materials, selection procedure including design specifications, criteria for selection etc.
  5. Understand various tests to study the properties of materials
A student who satisfactorily complete the course should be able to:

  1. Explain the importance of material study and state the type of material such as metals, polymers, ceramics, composites and semiconductors and also their applications.
  2. Describe the properties of various materials such as mechanical, electrical, thermal, physical and chemical properties of materials.
  3. the crystal and non-crystalline structures of materials.
  4. Distinguish between the properties of amorphous and crystalline materials
  5. Apply the generalized form of hooks law to predict the elastic behavior of the different materials. Characterize materials by stress and strain curves. Carryout laboratory tests on the above.
  6. Carryout destructive and non-destructive tests in the laboratory.
  7. Select a suitable material for any given product based on the design specifications and selection criteria.
  8. Refer to the standard data sources to find the properties of the suitable material and selection.
